Faith Over Formulas | Summit Kids
What happens when you follow a recipe or instruction manual word-for-word, but miss the actual point of what you're doing?
This Sunday, our leaders followed kid-given instructions to build a house, and they followed them literally. It made us laugh, but it also pointed us to a bigger lesson: A checklist doesn't make a real relationship.
In Week 5 of Galatians, we explored Galatians 3:1–14, where Paul warned believers against turning their faith into a rigid, mechanical recipe.
What We Taught: Relationship, Not a Recipe
The Galatians started their walk with God by simply trusting Jesus, but they quickly fell into the trap of following strict rule checklists to stay on God's good side.
Here is what we taught our kids this Sunday:
God Wants Your Heart, Not Just Your Checklist: Imagine having a "Friendship Checklist" where you had to say hello twice, spend 8 minutes together, and give a high-five. That doesn't make a best friend! In the same way, God wants a genuine friendship with us, not just checked boxes.
Prayer Is a Conversation: Prayer isn't reciting magical formulas or saying perfect words. It’s simply talking openly with a Heavenly Father who loves you.
Memory Phrase: "Relationship, not a recipe."
Interactive Learning: The Prayer Lab
To put this into practice, kids rotated through four hands-on Prayer Stations:
🙏 Tell God Something: Sharing how they were feeling today.
❤️ Thank God: Naming blessings in their lives.
🆘 Ask God for Help: Bringing worries and needs to Him.
👂 Be Quiet with God: Taking 30 seconds to pause and listen.
3 Ways to Bring the Lesson Home
Mix Up Family Prayer: One night this week, skip the standard, recited dinner or bedtime prayer. Go around the table and have every family member contribute one conversational sentence to God.
Use Prayer Starters: Use the Prayer Starter cards from your child's Faith File ("God, today I feel..." or "God, I don't understand...").
Shift from "Have To" to "Get To": When talking about spiritual habits like reading the Bible or going to church, frame them as opportunities to connect with Jesus rather than chores to complete.
Dinner Table Conversation Starters
What is the difference between following someone's rules and actually trusting them as a friend?
Have spiritual habits (like praying or reading the Bible) ever felt like a checklist to you?
What is one thing you want to talk to God about tonight?
