The Promise Is Bigger: How Jesus Welcomes You into God’s Family

Have you ever worried that a contract or agreement you relied on might get canceled or changed by a new set of rules down the road?

In Galatians 3:15–29, the Apostle Paul addresses a major question troubling early Christians: If God gave a set of rules through Moses 430 years after making a promise to Abraham, did the Law replace the original promise?

Paul’s answer is a resounding no! God’s original promise to Abraham—to bless every family on earth through his descendant—was bigger, earlier, and unbreakable.

Here are three foundational insights from Galatians 3:15–29 on why God's promise in Jesus Christ changes everything about our security, purpose, and identity.

1. God’s Promise Can Never Be Canceled

Paul uses a simple legal illustration from everyday life: once an agreement or covenant is validated, no one can set it aside or add conditions to it.

"The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise." — Galatians 3:17–18

Notice the direct emphasis Paul makes in Genesis 12:3 and 22:18: God promised that all nations would be blessed through Abraham's "child" (singular), pointing directly to Jesus Christ.

Salvation was never an afterthought or a contingency plan based on human rule-keeping. God made an unconditional covenant of grace, and because He is faithful, that promise stands unshaken forever.

2. The Law Was a Guardian, Not the Destination

If the promise saves us, why did God give the Law of Moses in the first place?

Paul explains that the Law was given alongside the promise for a specific reason and a specific season:

  • To Expose Our Need: The Law reveals our sinfulness and shows us where we fall short.

  • To Serve as a Guardian: Paul compares the Law to a paidagōgos—a trusted guardian or tutor who protected children until they reached adulthood. The Law guarded humanity until Christ came.

"The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian." — Galatians 3:24–25

As Paul writes in Romans 10:4, "Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given". The Law points out the sickness, but only Jesus provides the cure. Once you put your trust in Christ, you no longer live under a tutor's strict supervision—you live as a free child in God's household.

3. One Family, One Identity in Christ

When you enter God's family through faith, old human barriers that divide people crumble away.

"For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus." — Galatians 3:26–28

In baptism, we bury our old self, our self-righteousness, and any feelings of superiority or inferiority. Putting on Christ is like stepping into a brand-new set of royal clothes.

No matter your heritage, past mistakes, or socioeconomic background, if you belong to Christ, you are a full heir to the promises made to Abraham! There are no second-class citizens in the kingdom of God.

How to Respond: The R.S.V.P. to Grace

God's promise is an open invitation to every family on earth. If you are ready to respond to Jesus' invitation today, remember this simple R.S.V.P.:

  • R — Realize Your Need: Acknowledge that you need Jesus as your Savior.

  • S — Say You're Sorry: Confess your sins honestly to God and receive His forgiveness.

  • V — Verbalize Your Faith: Declare your loyalty and allegiance to follow Christ.

  • P — Plunge Your Past in Baptism: Publicly declare that your old way of life is buried and you are walking in newness of life!

Next Steps & Reflection

  • Are you still relying on a "guardian" mentality? Where are you tempted to trust in human effort rather than resting in Christ’s finished work[cite: 21, 22]?

  • Embrace Your True Identity: How does knowing you are a full child and heir of God change the way you view yourself and others this week?

A Prayer for the Week:

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your promise of salvation in Jesus can never be broken or canceled. Thank You that through faith, I am adopted as Your beloved child and made a full heir of Your heavenly promises. Help me lay down division, abandon performance, and walk confidently in the freedom of my new identity in Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen.
