Faith Over Formulas: Relying on Grace, Not Religious Checklists

Have you ever caught yourself treating your relationship with God like a math problem?

It goes something like this: If I read my Bible for 15 minutes, say the right prayers, avoid bad language, and attend church, then God will be pleased with me and bless my week.

It’s subtle, but without realizing it, many of us slip from walking in a vibrant relationship with Jesus into following a spiritual formula. We try to use human effort to finish what only God’s Spirit can do.

In Galatians 3:1–14, the Apostle Paul addresses this exact trap. The believers in Galatia had started their Christian journey by trusting in Jesus, but they were now being pulled into believing they had to keep ancient rules and formulas to maintain their standing with God.

Paul steps in with deep pastoral passion, calling them back to the pure simplicity of faith. Here are three foundational truths from Galatians 3 on why we must choose Faith Over Formulas.

1. Don't Replace Relationship with Religious Rules

Paul opens this chapter with a startling question:

"Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ." — Galatians 3:1–2

As theologian John Stott famously wrote, "There is then, it is safe to say, no Christianity without the cross. If the cross is not central to our religion, ours is not the religion of Jesus".

Paul points the Galatians back to their own experience. They didn't receive the Holy Spirit or experience God's miraculous power by filling out a religious checklist—they received Him by believing the Good News.

When we evaluate how we stay right with God, there are really only three paths:

1. Works Alone -------------> Self-made religion centered on your performance & earning God's favor.
2. Christ + Works ----------> Faith gets you in the door, but your effort keeps you saved (The Trap!).
3. Christ Alone ------------> Saved by faith in Jesus, living daily by faith, led by the Holy Spirit.

If you started your spiritual life by relying on the Holy Spirit, why try to complete it through human effort? Never trade a living relationship with God for a mechanical list of rules.

2. Abraham Shows Us What Real Faith Looks Like

To prove that salvation has always been by faith rather than rule-keeping, Paul points to Jewish history. He quotes Genesis 15:6 regarding Abraham, the father of the nation:

"Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith." — Galatians 3:6

Consider Abraham’s situation: God promised an elderly, childless man that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the night sky. Abraham didn't have a record of keeping the Mosaic Law to lean on (the Law wouldn't be given for another 430 years!). He simply took God at His word.

  • What is Biblical Faith? Faith isn't a vague feeling; it is the confidence that God is real and that He will do everything He promised to do.

Because Abraham trusted God, God credited him with righteousness. Paul makes a astounding point: Anyone who puts their trust in Jesus—Jew or Gentile—shares the exact same blessing as Abraham and becomes a true spiritual child of God!

3. Trust What Christ Has Done More Than What You Can Do

Trying to earn God’s favor through legalism or rule-keeping isn't just exhausting—it’s impossible. Paul points out that if you want to be made right with God by obeying the Law, you have to obey all of it, perfectly, all the time. Failing at even one point brings a curse.

"But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing." — Galatians 3:13

Jesus took the penalty of our broken promises, our missed marks, and our religious failures onto Himself at the cross. He paid the debt in full so that we could receive the promise of the Holy Spirit simply through faith.

Stop relying on your own spiritual performance. Your track record isn't what saves you; Christ’s finished work on the cross is!

Walking in True Freedom

The Gospel isn't a formula to master; it’s a Savior to follow. Faithfulness means daily harmonizing your life with the simple truth that Jesus died for you, rose again, and now lives in you by His Spirit.

Next Steps & Reflection

  • Where have you fallen into "Christ + Works" thinking? Are there spiritual habits you do out of guilt or performance rather than love?

  • Take God at His Word: What promise in Scripture do you need to trust God for this week, just like Abraham did?

  • Take Your Next Step: If you have placed your trust in Jesus, declare your faith publicly through baptism! Visit our website at summitsocal.org to sign up for our next Baptism Sunday.

A Prayer for the Week:

Heavenly Father, thank You that my acceptance with You doesn't depend on my own performance or formulas. Thank You that Jesus took the curse of my sin on the cross so that I could receive Your blessing and Your Holy Spirit through faith. Help me to stop trying to earn Your love, and teach me to walk daily in the freedom and joy of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
